John Sergeant (1937 - 2010)

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Born in London in 1937, John Sergeant moved to Faversham in Kent after his family was bombed out during World War II. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1959, where he won a Drawing Prize in 1961.

After graduating from the RA Schools, Sergeant taught part-time at art schools in Kent and worked on commissions including book jacket designs and a series of ‘room-portraits’ of interiors. He moved to Wales in 1983, and held the first of three exhibitions at the Maas Gallery in Mayfair in 1986. In 1989 the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) asked Sergeant to contribute drawings to his book Visions of Britain; two years later Sergeant accompanied the Prince on an official visit to Prague, resulting in an exhibition. Sergeant died in 2010.
