John Linnell (1792 - 1882)

Landscape and portrait painter. Son of carver and gilder, picture and looking glass framemaker, printseller, picture cleaner, James Linnell (1759-1836).

Linnell entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1805 and about the same time became a pupil of John Varley. He was a friend of William Blake and his daughter married Samuel Palmer. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1807, and a collection of his works was shown posthumously at the Royal Academy in 1883. See: http://www.racollection.org.uk/ixbin/indexplus?record=VOL3242</a
