Father of John Halphead Smith and grandfather of Gilbert Bakewell Stretton. A letter with the Royal Academy’s ‘Stretton bequest’ notes : ‘My grandfather, John Homes Smith of Worcester, where he was born in 1797 and died 1868, was a prolific artist; well known in Worcester and Shropshire as a painter of horses, hounds, hunting pictures and portraits…He painted too on Coalport china – hunting cups with sporting scenes, dessert and tea services with scenes of landscapes from his own innumerable sketches…’ (Written by Gilbert Bakewell Stretton, Chichester, July 1931).
