John Ewbank (1799 - 1847)

Landscape and marine painter, born in Darlington, who moved to Edinburgh and studied with Alexander Nasmyth. He was a founder member of the Scottish Academy in 1826. He became an alcoholic and left the city in disgrace in 1834, losing his status as an acadmician in 1838. Ewbank died in poverty in Sunderland.
