John Andre (1750 - 1780)

British army officer during the American War of Independence, who handled correspondence with American spies and and the American General Benedict Arnold, who was plotting the betrayal of West Point to the British. André was captured by American militiamen while returning (disguised as a civilian) from an interview with Arnold, and was hung as a spy. His likeness is known from a self-portrait he made in the year of his death.
