Linguist. Using the Rosetta stone and other monuments he deciphered ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and published his results in 1822 and 1824. In 1826 appointed Conservator of the Egyptian collection of the Louvre Museum, Paris. In 1828-9 made an archaeological survey of Egypt with I. Rosellini. In 1831 appointed first Professor of Egyptian Antiquities at the Collège de France.
