Sir James Wright

RA Collection: People and Organisations

Sir James Wright of Woodford, Essex. Diplomat. He was created a baronet in 1772 for his services as His Majesty’s Resident at Venice. In 1796 Wright presented a pastel portrait of Surgeon Bromfield by Francis Cotes to the Royal Academy.

The Legacies of British Slavery database records that Wright owned an interest in the Fountain estate and plantation on St Kitt’s via his wife, Catherine Stapleton. This property remained in the family until 1840 when it was sold to Lord Combermere (Note 1).
