Hans Tisdall (1910 - 1997)

Hans Tisdall was a German born artist who worked in the UK as a designer and teacher. He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Art before coming to London in 1930, where he taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and elsewhere. He painted murals and designed textiles. He was most notable for designing book jackets for the publisher Jonathan Cape in the 1940s and 50s. Tisdall was among the designers who contributed to the Festival of Britain in 1951, winning the competition to design the entrance to the funfair at Battersea Park’s pleasure garden.
