Soldier and administrator; in 117 succeeded his distant relative Trajan as emperor of Rome. Founder of Adrianople, Antinoopolis and other cities; commissioner of the Pantheon in Rome, the Villa at Tivoli and many other buildings and works of art; patron of learning and the arts. Commissioned Hadrian’s Wall in north Britain 122-8.
