Gwendy Caroe, the only daughter of William and Gwendoline Bragg, was born in 1907 in Adelaide, where her father was professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University. In 1923 William Bragg was appointed director of the Labratory at the Royal Institution and, as such, Gwendy became the first child to be brought up at the institution. She later married Alban Caroe, a conservation architect with strong roots in the Arts and Craft movement and played an important social role at the institution, enjoying lectures by Leonard Wolley and Ernest Rutherford.
