A leader of the western European armies in the first Crusade to the Holy Land, he took Jerusalem in 1099. He became a hero of several romances in western European languages. Lord of Bouillon 1076-96; Duke of Lower Lotharingia 1087-96; ‘Defender of the Holy Sepulchre’ 1099-1100.
