Eemyun Kang (b.1981, Busan), previously studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and currently lives and works in Milan, Italy.
Her paintings depict her fascination with nature and the process of morphology. Ably translating organic forms into lush abstraction, she creates complex natural worlds marked by energetic and fluid brushstrokes. For Kang, the idea of myth has been a tool that operates through the creative imagination. Myths as transitional tales, legend and folklores are also linked with the use of myth in her paintings as a starting point for creating a narrative event in imaginary time. Alternating between abstract and figurative registers, Kang creates imagined hybrid worlds or mystic landscapes. In Kang’s paintings, the paint and canvas constitute transformative elements that mediate between subject and object, subconsciousness and consciousness, and abstraction and figuration.
