David Davis (1837 - 1921)

David Davis was a scultpor born in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales. The family surname is spelt both ‘Davis’ and ‘Davies’ across different documentary sources making identification difficult.

Admitted to the Royal Academy Schools (Sculpture) on 21 December 1859. Awarded the silver medal for the best model from the antique in 1861. (See: Royal Academy ‘Annual Report’, (1862), p. 20).

He exhibited 13 works at the RA annual exhibitions between 1863-1887.

He was the younger brother of William Mynorydd Davis (1826-1901) who also studied sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, (from April 1854), and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1851-1888.
