Proclaimed emperor at York in 306, reigned 306-337. He legalised Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. Founder of New Rome (Constantinople); commissioner of many buildings and works of art. Son of emperor Constantius Chlorus and his Christian wife St. Helena; father of emperors Constantine II, Constantius II, Constans and empress Helen (consort of emperor Julian).
