Chris Cook

The primary subject of Chris Cook’s work is colour. She is fascinated by the endless possibilities of creating various hues and tones, even with a pared-down palette; the instability of colour and how one colour changes its properties when juxtaposed with another; and its power to evoke memories and emotions.

On one level, Cook’s work can be seen as a continuing exploration of specific shapes, the perception of colours, their numerous variations, and the interaction of colour and light. On another level, her work deals with the idea of opposites and interrelatedness; instability and balance, darkness and light, movement and stillness, heaviness and lightness, restriction and boundlessness. Her paintings give you a sense of equilibrium and harmony.
