Created Cardinal in 1627; bishop, 1655. Commander of the papal army. In 1633 settled with his brother Cardinal Francesco in Palazzo Barberini, founded Teatro Barberini. Patron of artists and writers; book-collector; poet. Nephew of Pope Urban VIII (1568-1644) and Cardinal Antonio Barberini senior (1569-1646); brother of Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597-1679).
