520 2 # $a In 1830 Waagen had been appointed director of the Königliche Gemäldegalerie in Berlin; but he made frequent study-visits abroad and published extensively on European galleries and collections. He visited Britain in 1835, 1850, 1851, 1854, 1856, 1857, 1862 and 1867, and greatly influenced the development of public provision for the arts in this country.
