Summary Note

This memoir, published anonymously, was by Frederic George Stephens, who had met Hunt and Millais at the Royal Academy Schools and joined with them to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.

The memoir concludes with the author's statement that his purpose has not been to praise a living man but 'to give an explanation of his principles of Art (while calling attention to the efforts of the modern English school) and to urge their importance'.

The Appendix is a compilation of 'Opinions Of The Press', all dated 1860.

Stephens wrote less favorably about the Pre-Raphaelites in his later publications.

Provenance

The title-page is inscribed in ink above the title, 'For the Royal Academy Library.' and below the title 'By Frederic G. Stephens.'

Binding Note

19th-century blue cloth-covered boards, upper and lower covers with blind-stamped decoration, upper cover lettered 'William Holman Hunt And His Works.'
