Summary Note

This novel was first published in Paris in 1788. It is an account of ancient Greek civilisation presented as a description of a tour of Greece by a young Scythian. The work was well received and was soon translated into German (1789), Italian (1791), English (1791) and Russian (1803).


An electronic reproduction was published in 2003 (Farmington Hills, Mich.: Thomson Gale). A microfilm version was published in 1990 (Woodbridge, CT: Research Publications).

Copy Note

The title page of Volume I is inscribed in pencil, '(Jean Jacques Barthélemy)'. The spines carry labels reading 'PA f 12'.
