Summary Note

This novel was first published in Paris in 1788. It is an account of ancient Greek civilisation presented as a description of a tour of Greece by a young Scythian. The work was well received and was soon translated into German (1789), Italian (1791), English (1791) and Russian (1803).

The title page of Volume I is inscribed in pencil, '(Jean Jacques Barthélemy)'. The spines carry labels reading 'PA f 12'.
