Summary Note
The work is an account of artists from the first decade of the 17th century onwards, excluding living persons - Bernini being the only notable omission. There is an interesting shift of emphasis between the first and second volumes. In the first Pascoli praises modernity and genius and admires the fecundity of the 17th century, whereas in the second he warns of the dangers of the imagination and recommends following the ancients.
The book has no plates, but the text carries many wood-cut decorated initials. The title-pages and the half-title of Vol. I are printed in red and black.

The front pastedown is inscribed in ink with an eleven-line note in Italian.
