The work was begun in 1747 and continued serially until Piranesi's death in 1778, by which time a complete set would have included a title-plate and 134 plates of views; Piranesi's son Francesco added a further two plates.

The plates are captioned, and show both ancient and modern buildings in Rome, and some views of Tivoli.
