Responsibility Note

The first plate (title-plate) is unsigned. The second is signed as designed, drawn and engraved by AMZ (i.e. Antonio Maria Zanetti). All others name the source-artist as Franciscus Parmensis (the last plate as Franciscus Mazzuola Parmensis), and are generally signed as engraved by Ioan. Antonius Faldoni - but one is signed as engraved by Andreas Zucchi, one as drawn and engraved by Antus. Ma. Zanetti, three as drawn by Zanetti and engraved by Faldoni, one as engraved by Carolus Orsolini. Pl. [15] is signed as engraved by Faldoni and drawn by Zanetti, but the wording may mean that this was drawn by Parmegianino.

Several plates carry dedications by A.M. Zanetti to connoisseurs (including two British collectors) - to Pierre Crozat, Gosuino Vilenbuoch, N. Vleughels, P.J. Mariette, Ioan. Ant. de Maroulle, F.M. Gabburi, Andrew Fountaine, Hugh Howard, G.M. Jabach, Ioseph Vincislao de Lichtenstein.

Summary Note

Publication-dates appear on several plates - of 1723, 1724, 1726 or 1735.

The plates show drawings by Parmigianino, of male and female figures, clothed or nude. Some show pastoral scenes. Two are of Christian subjects (a Virgin and Child with Saints, and an Adoration of the Shepherds).

Parmigianino was greatly admired in the eighteenth century, and his paintings and drawings were much reproduced.

Copy Note

The title-plate is inscribed in ink in an unknown hand, 'Roscoe' (i.e. probably William Roscoe, the historian and well-known collector of books and prints). The first plate after the title-plate is inscribed in ink in an unknown hand, 'AMZ -- Count Antonio Maria Zanetti'. Plate [8] is also inscribed in ink in an unknown hand, 'Zanetti sc.'.

Binding Note

19th-century half black morocco, green grained-cloth-covered boards; spine lettered 'Etchings From Parmigiano', 'R.A.' and '1796'.
