Hullmandel had been introduced to the technique of lithography in 1817 by Alois Senefelder during a visit to Munich. This publication is described by Twyman as marking a turning-point in the history of lithography in Britain. Hullmandel was dissatisfied with the printing of these Twenty-Four Views, and subsequently set up his own lithographic press, made many experiments with lithographic techniques and published several influential books on the subject.
