Summary Note

There is no title-page or title-plate. The work is listed in the 1802 catalogue of the library of the Royal Academy as 'Smith's Turkish Dresses'. Publication-dates of 1768 or 1769 are carried by all plates, except the first (a map of Constantinople), which carries the date 1767.

All plates except the first are captioned as engraved from the collection of Lord Baltimore.

The painter, Francis Smith, spent his early life in Naples. From 1763 he travelled with Lord Baltimore in Turkey, Greece and Poland, making the drawings which form the basis of the present publication. (By 1768 he was in London, and he exhibited with the Royal Academy between 1770 and 1773.)
