$a The title-page presents this as 'I. Deel', but no further volumes were published. Although it is not acknowledged on the title page, the French text from which this was translated was A.J. Dezallier d'Argenville's Abrégé de la vie des plus fameux peintres (3 vols., Paris, 1745-52). The text consists of forty-five biographies of Italian artists from the fifteenth century onwards, working in Rome, Florence and Venice. It was intended to help collectors distinguish stylistic movements and personal styles. This Dutch version has its own 'Inleiding, Van Den Nedeerduitssen Schryver'. Each biography is accompanied by one illustration - usually, but not always, a portrait of the artist. Each illustration carries the date of 1752. |
