General Note

Although the plates themselves are not numbered, the title-plate calls for twenty 'imitations', and numbers are assigned to the plates in a printed label pasted onto the front pastedown: 'Title Plate' and 'No. 1(-20)'.

Responsibility Note

All plates are signed as drawn by Thos. Lawrence and engraved by F.C.Lewis, apart from pl. [12], which is unsigned.

In each case the signature of Lewis is also his imprint as publisher, reading 'Engraved and published by F.C. Lewis' with his address and the date - apart from pl. [12] (unsigned) and [20](carrying no publisher's imprint).

Summary Note

A printed label pasted onto the front pastedown reads, 'F.C. Lewis's Imitations Of Lawrence, In Twenty Plates' and lists 'The Title Plate (a Portrait of Lawrence)' and plates 'No.1(-20)'.

All plates carry the date 'April 1839', apart from plates [12], [16] and [20], which are undated.

The title-plate (which incorporates a small vignette portrait captioned 'Sir Thos. Lawrence Aged 35' and a dedication to Queen Victoria) is followed by reproductions of twenty portrait drawings, listed as, 1. Emperor Francis of Austria, 2. George IV, 3. Miss Julia Boucherett, 19. Miss Barton, 20. Emily and Laura Calmady. Numbers are assigned to the plates in the printed list on the front pastedown. The plates themselves are not numbered, but all are captioned, apart from pl. [12] and [20]. Apart from the title-plate and the first portrait all plates are pasted in.
