"Exhibition no. 44" at head of title.
Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Fine Arts Society, 1886.
`Prefatory Note. At the request of The Fine Art Society I have furnished them with some commentaries on the sketches to explain my method of painting; and I did so on the strict condition that the paper should be published exactly as it left my hands; so that the Society are not in any degree answerable for the opinions expressed in it. John Brett. 38, Harley Street, November 14th, 1886.’ [verso of front cover].
`Note by the Director. The sketches and pictures are for sale at the prices charged by the artist at his own studio, a list of which can be seen by applying to the attendant. As regards the seven sketches marked with a start in the catalogue, Mr. Brett reserves the right to paint pictures from them during the winter, and special arrangements will be made as to the time of their delivery to their owners. The sketches are not signed, Mr. Brett having always maintained the rule that signature should be reserved from finished pictures only; but in all cases they bear the date and name of the place in his handwriting.’ [p.3].
