General Note

“Tomi Ungerer is considered by many the most original talent since Steinberg. His drawings need no captions. In them we see a human race which has become infected by the mechanical world which it has itself created and sanctioned. The shock of recognising ourselves is accompanied by a horrified amusement. We may resent Ungerer, but we turn the pages racked by curiosity, outrage and laughter. To quote from Jonathan Miller’s preface: `Ungerer has an excruciating inventive flair, cruelly comic, and those who read this volume as it should be read, straight through, in one sitting, will enjoy a sulphuric moral experience. Mr Ungerer was born in Strasbourg in 1931 and now lives in New York. He has illustrated both children’s books and books for adults, and has published two collections of cartoons." [dust-jacket].
