Summary Note

The added engraved title-plate reads, 'The True Effigies of the most Emminent Painters And Other Famous Artists That have Flourished in Europe Curiously Engraven on 125 Copper Plates London, Printed for D. Browne at ye Black Swan & T. Browne at ye Pestle and Mortar without Temple Barr: and to be Sold by them, and I. Smith at the West end of Exeter Exchange'.

The plates consist of: the added engraved title-plate; four unnumbered plates (viz. an earlier engraved title-plate with the imprint of Antwerp 1649, an allegory of Rome, and two portraits); numbered plates 1-121, showing portraits of artists, captioned with names of sitters and painters. Most sitters are Dutch or Belgian.

The earlier engraved title-plate reads, 'Image De Divers Hommes d Esprit Sublime Qui Par Leur Art Et Science Deburovent Vivre Eternellement et Des Quels La Louange Et Renommée Faict Estonner Le Monde A Anvers Mis En Lumiere Par Iean Meyssens Peinctre et Vendeur De LArt Au Cammestraet L'An. M.DC.XLIX.' The plates of the British publication are derived from this work and also from D. Lampson's Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae inferioris effigies (1572).
