General Note

This work appears with 2 volumes bound together (vol. I: [18], 297 p.; engr. frontis. / vol. II: 398 p.). The title-page of voll. I bears the year of publication 1759; vol. II has variant year of publication, 1758. Vol. II has its own pagination.

Vol. I has an engraved frontispiece by C. Grignion after F. Hayman, showing Sophocles writing surrounded by 3 muses. The title-pages of volumes I and II have an engraved representation of Sophocles enclosed in a cartouche, signed 'E. Gemma in Museo Florentino'. There is a dedication in vol. I to the Prince of Wales [later George III] by the translator. The plays in vol. I: Ajax, Electra, Philoctetes; the plays in vol. II: Antigone, Trachiniæ, Oedipus Tyrannus, Oedipus Coloneus.

The title-page of vol. I is inscribed in ink on the upper right-hand corner, 'Fredk. Nicolay'.

Binding Note

Brown leather binding with a later replacement spine; title lettered in gilt on a red leather spine label, 'Francklin's / Sophocles' and below, on the spine 'Vol. / I'. [NB. That is incorrect as the book contains both vol. I and vol. II.]
