Summary Note

The publication-date of 1848 is carried by the title-page; but most plates carry earlier dates - of 1843, 1844, 1845, 1847.

Warrington was one of the first British stained-glass artists working in the Gothic Revival style. From 1837 to 1841 he worked with A.W.N. Pugin. Most of his text is a history of stained glass in Britain and elsewhere in Europe from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, with a shorter section on its history from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.

Unusually Warrington chooses to illustrates the succession of styles mainly with modern examples by himself or others - a method which attracted much adverse criticism. The plates are captioned and show windows at [1] Bromley St Leonard's; [2] Norwich cathedral; [3] St Peter's, Stepney; [4] Snettisham church, Norfolk; [5] Christ Church, Coseley, Staffordshire; [6] St Chad's, Birmingham; [7] Blackbrook Catholic chapel; [8] Bishopstone church, Herefordshire; [9] Killamarsh; [10] Chichester cathedral; [11] (design for) Ely cathedral; [12] Trinity church, Brompton; [13] St Thomas, Stepney; [14] Stower, Provest church, Dorsetshire; [15] St Thomas's, Winchester; [16] Brasted church, Essex; [17] Beeford church, Yorkshire; [18, 19] St Marn's, Truro; [20] Monken Hadley church, near Barnet; [21] St Petrork, Cornwall; [22] Parish church, Deane; [23] (design for) the House of Lords; [24] Brazenose College, Oxford; [25] Beaumanor Park, Loughboro'. The designs show chiefly Christian subjects.

The plates are printed in full color.
