Responsibility Note

Most of the plates are unsigned by a draughtsman, but four are signed as drawn by R. West; three name the architect of the building shown (G. Dance, J. Gibbs). Most are signed as engraved by W.H. Toms; one, as engraved by C. Bowen; one, as engraved by G. Vertue. The headpice is signed as designed and drawn by C. Frederick Armiger and engraved by L.P. Boitard. One of the in-text illustrations is signed as made by T. Bowles.

The work is dedicated by the author to the King (George II).

Summary Note

This work was issued in parts between May 1737 and 1739. Three plates carry the date 1738. (A second edition in two volumes, with expanded text and many more plates, appeared in 1756.)

The plates show maps or panoramas of London and various churches and public buildings.

18th-century calf, upper and lower covers having an armorial device gilt-stamped; rebacked in 20th century, spine decorated in gilt in 18th-century manner, brown morocco spine-labels lettered 'Maitland's History Of London London MDCCXXXIX'.
