Summary Note
The publication-date of October 15 1829 appears on the title-plate, but most plates carry earlier publication-dates, and two parts of the text carry later ones (Preface, December 1st 1829; dedication, January 1st 1830). The plates appear to have been published serially in four groups of five plates - in 1827 April (pl. 3, 6, 7, 12, 15), 1827 Aug. (pl. 2, 8, 11, 16, 17), 1828 Mar. (pl. 5, 9, 13, 19, 20), 1829 Oct. 15 (pl. 1, 4, 10, 14, 18).
The work describes the carved wooden pulpit, screens, altar, panelling and fireplace, once installed in the chapel at Luton Hoo between 1612 and 1674, and recently installed by Lord Bute in a new chapel designed by R. Smirke in 1816. The text mentions the possibility that these furnishings may have been originally made in 1548 or earlier. They were destroyed by fire in 1843.
