Almost all plates are signed as painted or drawn by Hogarth and engraved by T. Cook or T. Cook and Son. Most carry the publishers' imprint of Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme and the date.
520 2 # $a John Nichols's Biographical anecdotes of Mr. Hogarth, and a Catalogue of his works, with occasional remarks had first been published in 1781, with enlarged editions in 1782 and 1785. In this edition most plates carry publication-dates, ranging from 1806 November 1 to 1809 November 1.

The two frontispieces are portraits of Hogarth. The plates are engravings after Hogarth, by T. Cook (who had already produced a series of larger engravings after Hogarth in 1806 as Hogarth Restored, which had not been well received). The folding plate in the second volume shows the artist's handwriting.
