General Note

The first part of the Dictionary of architecture, letter A comprising Aachen—Albumen, was issued in May 1853. The work continued being issued in parts until the final part in 1892. It was meant to be bound in 8 volumes of text with accompanying 3 volumes of full-page plates; however, the copy in the library of the Royal Academy of Arts largely remains in unbound parts, the two bound volumes do not represent the intended contents as planned. The history and development of the dictionary was detailed in 'A retrospect' by Arthur Cates, the Honorary Secretary of the Architectural Publication Society, dated April 1892, when the final part of the last text volume was published. The work was compiled and edited by Wyatt Papworth. The copies of the dictionary have been bound in various ways in individual collections.

Each letter was paginated separately. Some letters were followed by more extensive Detached essays', paged separately and in some collections bound as a separate work. Volumes 7-8 were printed by Whiting. The in-text illustrations are wood engravings. The full-page lithographic illustrations were printed by various London lithographers.

The unbound parts of the Dictionary of architecture in the Royal Academy are in store as follows: [Parts XII-XV 1860-62 covering F-I. In phase box], [Part XVI 1863-65 covering Impact - Iron and Parts XVIII-XIX 1866-67 covering I-L. In phase box], [Part XX, 1877 covering M, N & O. In phase box], [Part XXI, 1881 covering P-Q.
