The book was hailed as a highly readable and important contribution to scholarship. A revised edition was published in 1878.

The frontispiece of Volume I shows an 'Etruscan Mirror ...', the plate at p.235 the 'Valley Of Tombs, Castel D'Asso', that at p.399 the 'Ponte Della badia, Vulci', that at p.442 'Campanari's Garden, Toscanella'; the frontispiece of Volume II shows 'The Farewell Of Admetus And Alcestis from an Etruscan vase ...' . In-text illustrations show views of sites, plans and maps, and Etruscan antiquities and inscriptions.
