The title on the added title-page of Volume I reads, 'Tableaux ... sous la direction de M. Lacombe, Peintre; Avec Les Explications, Par M. A Paris, Chez Lacombe, Peintre, Editeur de l'Ouvrage ...'.

Most plates carry two prints - the upper showing usually a painting but sometimes a piece of ancient sculpture; the lower, one or two ancient engraved gems.

The subjects of the ancient sculptures and gems are mythological. Most of the paintings show Christian or mythological subjects, but some are allegories, portraits, 'genre' scenes or landscapes.
