Responsibility Note

Three of these suites ('Suite des pays à sujets pastoraux', 'Suite des paysages avec l'histoire du Bon Samaritain' and 'Suite des paysages avec sujets du Nouveau Testament') have all four of their plates signed by Bourdon as painter and engraver ('S. Bourdon pinx. et sculp. C.P.R.'); and one plate in each of these three suites carries also his imprint, 'Se Vend Chez l'Autheur au fauxbourg S. Anthoine'. But the two plates from the 'Suite des grands paysages' are signed as painted by Bourdon but engraved by his pupil, J. Prou ('S. Bourdon pinxit. cum privil. J. Prou sculp.'); and both carry his imprint, 'Chez l'Autheur au fauxbourg St. Anthoine proche la halle'.

Summary Note

These fourteen unnumbered plates have no title plate. They are listed as 'Landscapes' by the compiler of the 1802 catalogue of the Library of the Royal Academy, but are described by Thuillier as four separate sets, to which he assigns the following titles:

Suite des paysages à sujets pastoraux [pl. 1-4, containing 'La Sortie du troupeau', 'Le Petit pont de planches', 'Le Chariot frappé par la foudre', 'Le Chariot embourbé'];

Suite des paysages avec l'histoire du Bon Samaritain [pl. 5-8, containing 'Le Voyageur laissé pour mort', 'Les Lévites indifférents au blessé', 'Le Bon Samaritain s'arrêtant pour soigner le blessé', 'Le Bon Samaritain arrivant à l'auberge'];

Suite des grands paysages [pl. 9, 10, containing 'Paysage avec la fuite en Egypte', 'Paysage au grand chariot'];

Though all fourteen plates are signed as 'painted' by Bourdon, no corresponding paintings have been identified.

Provenance

Recorded in RAA Library, Catalogue, 1802.
