Summary Note
Plates [3-26] show clothed, usually single, figures of men, women or children, many in country backgrounds. Plate [1], the title-plate, incorporates a vignette portrait of Gainsborough.
Most of the plates are in tinted lithography, in imitation of crayon originals, many of which had been drawn by Gainsborough on tinted paper with white highlights.
Binding Note
19th-century black morocco, upper and lower covers having gilt rococo borders with royal arms of Britain gilt-stamped centre; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'Studies Of Figures By Gainsborough Imitation Of The Originals By R. Lane.' The upper cover is stamped as 'Bound By Hering'.
