The plates show: (Volume I) a map of Venice, two aerial views of the city, and thirty-six views of palaces; (Volume II) churches, public buildings and public ceremonies - all identified by captions in Latin, Italian and French. The sequence reaches its climax with a show of fireworks and a public display of fisticuffs, and ends with a quiet view of the campo di S. Stefano.

This set of views takes its place in a tradition of Venetian vedute. The publisher acknowledges in his preface his debt to the 'authenticas tabulas P. Coronelli, Carlevari, Louisae'. Carlevaris was one of the first to take up the work of such view-painters as J. Heintz, G. Richter and Vanvitelli, and established a tradition which flowered in the work of Canaletto, Marieschi, Bellotto and Guardi. British and other visitors responded with enthusiasm.
