Responsibility Note

Summary Note

The text is biographic and critical. It includes a catalogue of portraits and drawings by Holbein at Windsor Castle, and Wornum's arguments for the credentials of the Basel version of Holbein's Virgin and Child (the 'Meier Madonna') as against the Dresden copy.

The plates show works by Holbein. Two are photographs pasted in.

In-text illustrations are mainly head- and tail-pieces and initials, several incorporating designs by Holbein.
