Summary Note

A note at the end of the 'List Of Plates' states, 'The Chantrey Gallery contains the original models of monumental and other large figures by the late Sir Francis Chantrey, presented to the University by his widow, Lady Chantrey, A.D. 1842.' Some of these models have been destroyed; others remain in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

In the early nineteenth century Chantrey was one of the leading sculptors in Britain, particularly admired for his portrait busts. He is also remembered for bequeathing about £100,000 to the Royal Academy for the purchase of British works of art for a national collection - works now housed in the Tate Britain gallery, London.

Plate 60 shows an overview of the Chantrey gallery. Most other plates show portrait statues by Chantrey of persons in Britain or India, and are captioned with the names of the sitters. Plates 45, 46 show figures from Homer; a few are captioned simply as designs for monuments.
