Responsibility Note

The frontispiece and plates are unsigned; but the list of 'Woodcuts And Other Illustrations' states that the frontispiece and the other two portraits were drawn by Julian Brewer. The printer is named on the verso of the half-title: 'Plymouth: Printed By Roger Lidstone, George Lane, South.'

Summary Note

The frontispiece shows a portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds. The plates show portraits of Revd. Samuel Reynolds and Miss Frances Reynolds, and facsimiles of drawings, letters and the Discourses by Reynolds.

Provenance

[First copy:] Presented in 1963 by Dorothea Short from the library of her father Sir Frank Short, RA. [Second copy:] A preliminary leaf is inscribed in ink, 'Library of the Royal Academy presented by the Author'. According to the RA Annual Report for 1860 (p. 33) this copy was received sometime between July 1859 and the 'close of 1860.'

[First copy:] 19th-century red cloth, upper and lower covers decorated in blind; gilt-decorated spine, lettered 'Reynolds And His Works.' and 'Longman & Co. London.' Bound with one other. [Second copy:] 19th-century half green morocco, marbled-papered boards; spine lettered 'Reynolds And His Works'. Bound with one other.
