This was the earliest biography of Sir Francis Chantrey, who in the early nineteenth century was one of the leading sculptors in Britain, particularly admired for his portrait busts. He is also remembered for bequeathing about £100,000 to the Royal Academy for the purchase of British works of art for a national collection - works now housed in the Tate Britain gallery, London.
