Summary Note

Most plates carry a date (1840 or 1841).

The plates reproduce portrait-drawings of local persons and British visitors in Turkey (Constantinople, Smyrna), Lebanon (Beirut) and the Holy Land (Dead Sea, Jordan, Jerusalem). They are all described in the 'Table of Contents' and captioned in the plate. While returning from the Holy Land in 1841 Wilkie died at sea.
