The added engraved title-plate of Volume I is signed as designed and drawn by Iacopo da Pontormo and engraved by Santi Pacini. Most of the numbered plates are signed as drawn by 'H' (i.e. Ignazio Hugford) (occasionally by D. Ferretti) and engraved by G.B. Cecchi, C. Colombini, B. Eredi or G. Betti. Occasionally a source-artist is named (F. Salviati, G. Caccini, A. Allori, J. Bassano, G. Vasari, C. Allori, G. Pagani, M.A. Cerquozzi, F. Vanni, Van Dyck, Purbus, O. Leoni, J.B. Descamps, S. Vouet, F. Boschi, C. Maratta, J. Vignali, Giordano, F. Cignani, Largilier, P. Testa, Rosalba, B. Luti, S. Ricci, F. Solimena, A.D. Gabbiani, Raphael, Fra Bartolommeo, F. Boschi, D. Campiglia, H. Summary Note
There are two title variants. That on the added engraved title-page in Volume I reads, 'Istoria E Ritratti di Celebri Professor di Pittura, Scultura e Architettura ...'; that on the title-plate of Volume XIII reads, 'Supplemento Alla Serie Dei Trecento Elogi E Ritratti Degli Uomini I Più Illustri In Pittura, Scultura E Architettura O Sia Abecedario Pittorico Dall' Origine Delle Belle Arti A Tutto L'Anno MDCCLXXV'.
The publication dates of the series were: vol. 1 in 1769; 2 in 1770; 3, 4 in 1771; 5. in 1772; 6, 7 in 1773; 8-10 in 1774; 11, 12 in 1775; 13 in 1776.
The work is a collection of portraits of artists, accompanied by notes on their lives, mostly summarised from Vasari, Malvasia, and others, by Hugford's friends (including Francesco Raù and Modesto Rastrelli). There are twenty-five portraits in each of the first twelve volumes (a total of 300 plates) and an added engraved title-plate in volume I. The 'Supplemento' (volume XIII) is a biographical dictionary and bibliography, with only one supplementary portrait and 'Elogio' - that of Fuga.
Both the text and the plates are derived from earlier publications; and many of the plates name the source. They include Vasari's Vite (editions of 1759-60 and 1767-72), R. Soprani's Vite (1674), the Museum Florentinum (1731), C. Ridolfi's La maraviglie dell'arte (1648), L. Pascoli's Vite (1732), A.J. Dézallier d'Argenville's Abrégé (1742-5), J. B. Descamp's La vie des peintres (1753-64), G.P. Bellori's Vite (1682), C. C. Malvasia's Felsina pittrice (1678), Milizia's Vite (1768) and G.B. Passeri's Vite (1772).

Purchased from Francesco Sastres for £5 5s. on 19 April 1788 (see Sastres' invoice of that date 'for books sent to Mr. Wilton for the Royal Academy').
