Summary Note

Androuet du Cerceau's [Premier] Livre d'architecture had appeared in 1559; the Troisieme Livre was published in 1572.

All three are pattern books designed to propagate in France styles already favoured in Italy. The first offers plans and measurements for town houses; the second, examples of mantelpieces, dormers, doors, fountains, wells, pavilions and tombs; the third, designs for country houses and gardens.

In the dedication of this Second Livre Androuet announces a projected survey of royal and other buildings of France - which was eventually published as Le Premier [-Second] Volume des plus excellents bastiments de France (1576, 1579).

A facsimile of all three architecture books was published in 1965 (Ridgewood NJ).

Recorded in RAA Library, Catalogue, 1802.
