520 2 # $a In the Rhymes Shee argues for national patronage of artists. The first edition had been issued earlier in the same year. The Rhymes were well received; and made their contribution to the climate of opinion which led to the founding of the British Institution in 1807.

A third edition was published in 1809; and was continued by Shee's Elements Of Art (1809).

The half-title is inscribed in ink, 'J. H. Smith Caradoc Lodge Church Stretton' and in pencil, 'Sir Martin Archer Shee President of the Royal Academy B.1770 D 1850 J.HS.' [This is probably in the hand of the artist John Homes Smith, Gilbert Stretton's grandfather.]
