The work is of loose leaves and mounted plates in a portfolio. At the beginning of the list and descriptions of the plates in the portfolio the contents are described as, 'The drawings reproduced in the present issue consist ... exclusively of portraits. They represent the work of various masters of the Italian, French, and English schools distinguished in this branch of art, and are especially chosen (with the exception of no. 12) to illustrate the method of drawing in two or more chalks ... The faithful reproduction by photographic means of drawings executed in this manner is a task presenting great difficulties, both chemical and mechanical ...'
