At the beginning of the list and descriptions of the plates in the portfolio the contents are described as, 'The drawings reproduced in this issue are chosen exclusively from the works of the Italian masters, expecially those of the fifteenth century and beginning of the sixteenth, with one or two examples by later hands.'
